And the thing most people get wrong about him: Peter is a master of manipulation and playing the long game. Prior to Bendis/ MCU trailers…
He’s a mortal on a team of superhumans. His usefulness on the team is drawn largely from being the emotional support, peacekeeper, and idea-guy. While he can shoot a gun and hold his own, he’s never been one of the heavy-hitters.
That leaves him at a significant disadvantage — not just on the team but as a member of the universe (outside of earth). He’s not the oblivious genius MCU’s trailers/Bendis make him out to be — he’s very aware of how he comes off. He has to be. And that awareness began long before v2. This is the guy who OBSESSIVELY works towards getting revenge on the aliens who killed his mom. This is a guy who does a complete 180 personality-wise because he gets rejected from NASA for being so anti-social and unlikable. This is a guy who uses every advantage that comes his way for the greater good even if it’s not the right thing to do. He kills an innocent guy to get into space, throws around his title of Starlord he has long since divorced himself from, gets Mantis to telepathically coerce everyone into joining the team, and that’s just scratching the surface.
He has a really good mask — which works both to his advantage and detriment. And few people can really see all the way through it. Even Thanos knows to be wary of Peter. One of the reasons he clicks with Richard Rider and Rocket is because they’re able to see through that mask. Most of the team doesn’t know where they stand with him/take him as seriously as they could because it’s rare that this mask falls away. In fact, aside from when Peter is around a few select people, it usually only falls away when he’s pissed — see his fight with Gorilla Man and when someone puts a member of his team at an unnecessary risk.
- His sense of humor is drawn largely from being facetious and playing oblivious to see where he stands with people/ how he can manipulate them without their realizing it (not unlike Natasha). He relies on being underestimated.
Okay, yes, this is 100% true, but also. It’s very, very good to consider what he uses those skills for.
Peter Jason Quill started as this broken kid who wanted vengeance and was willing to lie and kill to get it… and, at the same time, he wasn’t. He lied, and then admitted to his lie without having to. When he could have lost everything. Because he was lying for a selfish reason.
But then he became Star-lord. And he had a responsibility. He freed slaves. He saved empires. He warded off disasters. He saved planets. He learned about creatures of amazing beauty and uniqueness and protected them, even when they terrified him, in a way.
He sacrificed a peopled space station to save the universe. Then turned around and turned himself in, for the crime of killing that many people.
He had Mantis make his team become a team… because he knew that the Universe needed protection, any protection, and this was the most that he could give.
In short, after the initial admission to the master of the Sun, Peter Quill never, ever opted to act, however horrible the action may be, out of self-interest. Sure, if something fell his way, he - in some mental states - took it. But working for #1 was never his motivation. And that combination - not an angel, but always doing it all for the safety of those who need protection - makes him a really, really amazing character, to me.
There’s a certain ruthlessness to Quill. He’s willing to go to extraordinary lengths for the most altruistic reasons. He’s willing to go the distance, to do the dirty work, to be hated and reviled by people that are only alive because of him. He almost seem to hate himself, willing to sacrifice his freedom, his life, even his very goodness for other people because he doesn’t see any value in himself anyway. And because of that tendency to give his all for people he’s never met, he’s loved and admired the universe over, even when he doesn’t think he deserves it.
Quill and Rider, no 14.
I needed something different tonight.
Sequential art funpractice, coming nowhere near a comic store near you. There’s not really any specific story (that I’m going to admit to) here, I wanted to challenge myself to rough out a page as fast as possible. With extra mess!
WALKMAN ADVENTURES IN THE GALAXY.
So I’ve change Rocket quite a bit cause I wasn’t happy with how he came out.
Also Have a bonus Cosmo:
Shown in our newest trailer, what do you think mysterious device is? Tesla appears to have had a hand in its design…
How to make yourself cross-eyed in a just a few layers, a tutorial by me.

Thanks for your time, and be excellent to each other.
I’ve had my Peter icon for.. a long time. I thought I’d draw up a new one. This one got pretty serious, and now I’m not sure it’s quite what I’m looking for. But I also wanted to practice deeper coloring in Manga Studio, so mission accomplished there.
